Praying with Scripture - Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina is a traditional Catholic practice of praying with Scripture consisting of four movements: Reading, Meditating, Praying, and Contemplating. It is a rhythmic, personal encounter with God where you listen for how His Word speaks to your heart.
How to Practice Lectio Divina:
- Prepare: Find a quiet space, light a candle, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide your time. Select a short passage from the Bible, such as the daily Mass readings or a Gospel story.
- Read (Lectio): Read the passage very slowly out loud. Listen with your heart and take note of a specific word or phrase that captures your attention.
- Meditate (Meditatio): Read the passage again. Savor the word or phrase that stood out to you. Reflect on what God is saying to your life right now, and what feelings arise in your heart.
- Pray (Oratio): Read the passage a third time. Respond directly to God through a personal conversation. Tell Him what you are thinking and feeling, and ask for the grace to live out what He has revealed.
- Contemplate (Contemplatio): Read the passage a final time, then release the words. Rest in silence and simply enjoy God’s presence and embrace.
